SEINFELD - Such a Great Show
61
One of my favourite television comedy shows is SEINFELD, it’s a shame that NBC stopped making the show over 10 years ago.
Seinfeld originally ran from 1989 to 1998, the series is now often re-run on pay TV.
The show was created jointly by Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld, Jerry being the main star in the show
Seinfeld is set in New York, mostly in Jerry’s apartment or in the local coffee shop. It’s four main characters are a group of friends who generally hang out and chew the fat about often meaningless subjects. In fact the show is almost a show about nothing, the mundane (but never boring) daily lives of the four main characters and their acquaintances
Main characters:
Jerry Seinfeld (Jerry Seinfeld) – a stand-up comedian, regularly starts and ends relationships;
George Constanza (Jason Alexander) – Jerry’s best friend, likes to try to impress people, often jealous of others;
Elaine Benes (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) – once dated Jerry, somehow gets on with the three men but often pushes them about;
Cosmo Kramer (Michael Richards) – Jerry’s strange neighbour, often slides into Jerry’s apartment to borrow something or anything.
The nine seasons of the show tried to maintain continuity with stories often spanning seasons or even popping up in future seasons. However you always had a sense that the characters never improved themselves, always remained quite emotionless.
The show had great plotlines, often about nothing, great catchphrases that will never be forgotten, for example “not that there’s anything wrong with that”.
Seinfeld was commercially a great success and the show won a multitude of Emmy’s.
Often shown as marathons on pay TV, recently TV1 in Australia showed all 180 episodes back to back, a marathon that lasted a full 80 hours!
Seinfeld is frequently cited as the greatest (or one of) television shows ever, I for one wish they were still making new episodes.
If you get time and it’s on your TV have a look, I am sure you will want to see all 180 shows.

I never did "get" Seinfeld; I feel as though I'm missing out on a part of American culture. I never got Johnny Carson, either. Many of the older, established late night hosts are low on content; younger comedians such as Conan O'Brien actually seem to want to work for a living. Sorry, I'm rambling, I know; it's just that Seinfeld and the late show hosts are a kind of tradition in American comedy that I just don't seem to be able to appreciate. Do either of you -- you or dork -- have any advice for a demented old woman on what defines American humor?
I'm Irish and I love Seinfeld so much, must admit to liking american comedy in general, Fraiser is another one that will never get old

What an outstanding show! I own every season on DVD and can watch each episode multiple times without tiring of them.
Unfortunately, there will never be another show like Seinfeld. The uniqueness of the storylines and the great combination of cast and characters can never be matched. Curb Your Enthusiasm is as close as you can get.
