Protecting Your Lungs With Vitamin E
70
Did you know that regularly taking vitamin E supplements may help you to protect your lungs, particularly important for smokers. The fourth leading cause of death in the United States is Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), a lung condition that includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. These conditions are almost always associated with smoking.
Research, funded by the US government through Women’s Health Study found that the risk of suffering from COPD could be reduced by a modest 10% through the regular taking of vitamin E supplements – often over many years. Although a risk reduction of 10% is small, the consequences of COPD are often very serious and life threatening causing the lung to slowly die. Currently there is not really a cure for COPD available though treatment can slow down the decline in lung function. The symptoms of COPD include shortness of breath, coughing and general fatigue.
The recently carried out research studied 39,876 women who were over the age of 45 years. Each women did not have COPD at the time the research started and 50% were randomly selected to take vitamin E supplements (600 IU every two days) and / or aspirin (100mg every day) and the other 50% selected to take a placebo or aspirin. After ten years 3.81% of women taking the vitamin E (with or without aspirin) developed COPD, whilst 4.24% of the women taking the placebo or aspirin developed COPD.
The results indicate that taking vitamin E supplements reduced the risk of suffering from COPD by 10%. When carrying out the study, the researchers (from Cornell University and Brigham and Women’s hospital) took account of factors such as age and whether the person was a smoker or not.
So according to the research, taking vitamin E supplements can reduce the likelihood of suffering from COPD, albeit a relatively small reduction in the risk. Other experts have also advised that the so called ACE antioxidants (vitamins A, C and E) can reduce oxidative stress that leads to COPD. As no harm can come from taking such supplements everyone should be recommended to start taking them now and continue to into the future.
